This project offers excellent year-round recreational opportunities. An ice skating rink has been constructed in the northern portion of the project area, in the Portage Commerce Square. This rink is equipped with advanced chilling units which allow the rink to remain frozen in air temperatures up to 50°F. A warming room offers refuge for cold skaters, while concessions are also available. An amphitheater has been constructed to the north of the ice rink, providing opportunities for entertainment during the summer months. The ice rink serves as a reflecting pool, complete with a fountain during these warmer periods. The constant flow of cold groundwater used in the reflecting pool overflows a small weir to establish a new source of baseflow within the reconstructed drain channel providing improved stream habitat. The Consolidated Drain Project also adds to the already extensive network of trails throughout the City of Portage. Pedestrian trails are located throughout the stormwater treatment facility. Interpretive markers have been placed at appropriate locations in order to inform and educate the public about this valuable area. |

| As part of the overall stormwater improvement strategy, education and information are viewed as critical elements for public awareness and support in order to create interest and awareness of stormwater management. Self-guided interpretive trails are an integral part of the project. These non-motorized trails connect Portage Commerce Square with the Portage Bicentennial Park providing opportunities for all residents to enjoy and learn about the vital surface and groundwater resources that have been protected via implementation of this system. | |||||||||||||||||||||
