July 2004 Update: General observations identified outstanding vegetative growth. Several grasses were noted, and forbs, such as coneflowers and bergamot, were blooming. The most abundant native growth was identified in the northern plot (no topsoil, prairie seeds).

October 2002 Update: General observations and quadrant sampling surveys were recorded for the the three plots of the prairie in October of 2002. Several native species, including asters, bergamot and little bluestem, were observed in the northern plot (no topsoil, praire seeds). Invasive plants were only observed in the outer areas of the plot, near the gravel road. The middle plot (topsoil, prairie seeds) saw better praire plant success in the inner areas, but abundant knapweed growth in the northeast area. The southern plot (topsoil, grass seed) contained dominant grasses, vetch and ragweed.

August, 2001 Update: Since planting in fall of 2000, the Graphic Packaging Prairie site has responded remarkably well. Nine native species have been positively identified to be growing from seed in the areas planted with prairie grass and flower seeds. The areas planted without topsoil are responding markedly better than those areas where topsoil was added. The Project Update page provides details on the changes which have been taking place. Finally, the Inventorying page provides results of quadrat samples taken of the study area in July, 2001.
